After releasing in early access last week, the masses can now take to the stars with the release of Starfield. Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG is officially out now on Xbox and PC.

Although last week saw a major info dump on the many systems and gameplay mechanics in Starfield, we’re here with some very important beginner’s tips for those first experiencing this massive game.

As you’re probably just jumping into the game for the first time, you may be overwhelmed by all of the character customization options. Here are some helpful beginner’s tips.

Your Background isn’t terribly important

During Starfield’s first campaign mission, “One Small Step,” you’ll customize your character. In addition to your character’s appearance, you’ll also select your “background.” There are a total of 21 different backgrounds to choose from, each one offering three different starting skills. This can be a bit overwhelming since if this is your first time playing, you may not know what all of them mean — or even what type of playstyle you want to go for.

Don’t worry. Your Background isn’t terribly important. All it does is provide you with your first three skills. But it doesn’t lock you into a specific class track and there’s no maximum number of skill points you can earn. All your background does is unlock your initial skills, but you’ll quickly be able to unlock more if you aren’t especially fond of the ones you’ve selected.
