Mortal Kombat 1 has revealed details on its brand new Invasion mode that will change the way the game is played for the franchise. A playable demo at Gamescom this week saw a number of people get their hands on it. One of those was a member of the PlayStation Blog, and they issued a detailed report on the mode.

Invasion will function like a board game and have players move along the squares while eliminating  enemies. This will let you level up, earn new gear, in-game “Kurrency” and more. Your mission will be to stop other enemy players from invading by completing various different objectives in order to advance the mode’s narrative. Invasion should play out along with the main story by adding any DLC characters in. A mode of this caliber is something entirely new for Mortal Kombat, and it seems to have an infinite number of possibilities.

Mortal Kombat 1 is a complete re-write of the franchise. Hence, the start over at 1. After Liu Kang became the fire god thanks to Raiden, he completely created a brand new universe. Kameo assist characters make their debut for the first time and the lore had been completely altered. For example, classic enemies Scorpion and Sub-Zero are now literally brothers. The first DLC Kombat Character Pack has also been revealed, adding exciting new characters such as Invincible’s Omni-Man and The Boys Homelander. Each character will be voiced by their TV counterpart JK Simmons and Antony Starr respectively. In addition, there is also a Jean Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage – a call back to the character originally desired to play the role in 1992.

Mortal Kombat will release on September 19 on Xbox Series consoles as well as PC and PS5. What are you most looking forward to seeing in this new iteration (other than fatalities of course)? Let us know!
