Is Baldur’s Gate 3 coming to Xbox One or PlayStation 4?

At this point in 2023, more people than not have made the jump to either an Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, or a PlayStation 5. All three of these consoles are more widely available than when they first were released. Eventually, it will be the norm to have one of these consoles and the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will become an antique. As for now, not everyone has fully made the jump and it has prompted the question about a potential Baldur’s Gate 3 release on Xbox One or PlayStation 4.

Ever since Baldur’s Gate 3 debuted its full release on August 3, it has become one of the most popular RPG video games of 2023. The reviews have been stunning, and gamers have been enjoying their experience so far. More gamers are going to get to enjoy the full release experience on September 6, when Baldur’s Gate 3 releases to everyone on PlayStation 5.

While we don’t know an exact release date, Larian Studios basically did confirm that there will be an Xbox Series X|S version at some point. They stated that “We don’t like announcing anything until we’re ready, because we don’t want to get peoples hopes up until we’re sure we can deliver.” This was the first hint at an Xbox Series X|S version, but the Director of Publishing at Larian Studios dove into this a little bit more by saying “We’ve said many times in the past that the issue is getting split-screen working on the Series S, which is taking more time, but is in progress.”

This right here confirms that Larian Studios are trying their best to resolve issues with releasing on the Xbox Series S and when they are confident in their product, they will announce an Xbox Series X|S version of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Is an Xbox One or PlayStation 4 version of Baldur’s Gate 3 in the cards?

With all of this talk about Baldur’s Gate 3 expanding to different consoles, it makes us wonder about the future of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox One and PS4. There haven’t been lots of rumbling surrounding an Xbox One or PlayStation 4 version because that is not in the cards for Larian Studios.

Larian Studios did make a comment in regards to a current generation version of Baldur’s Gate 3, but they stated that the game would not be able to run according to their standards. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a very complex and big game that needs the right power in order to run a game of that nature. The Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 simply do not harness that power.

You can already see the struggles of already trying to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to the Xbox Series S and they are having trouble with that. There would just be no way they can develop the game to run on an Xbox One or PlayStation 4. The consoles aren’t programmed to run that powerful of a game. However, it did cross their minds for a moment before they realized it simple could not happen.

With that being said, if you haven’t upgraded to the next generation consoles, you probably are going to want too sooner rather than later. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 aren’t going to be called the current generation for long because it is getting to a point where the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 feel like the current generation.
