Can you play the Twisted Metal games on PS4 and PS5?
Peacock’s Twisted Metal series, an adaptation of the popular PlayStation video games, arrives today, July 27. The series is a loose adaptation, with writers Michael Jonathan Smith, Rhett Reese, and Paul Wernick taking the concept of the vehicular combat games and turning it into a “high-octane comedy.” I’m not sure how well that will be received, but the series itself might spark renewed interest in the PlayStation games.
Where can you play the Twisted Metal games?
You may be surprised to hear that there have been a total of 10 Twisted Metal games released since 1995, when the first was released on the original PlayStation. Some of these are spin-offs and others are just not as popular.
Twisted Metal (1995) and Twisted Metal 2 (1996) are probably the two most beloved games in the franchise and probably the ones you want to play if you’re new to the series. Thankfully, both just released on the PlayStation Store earlier this month. Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal 2 are playable on PS4 and PS5 with Trophy Support. They are available for $9.99 each and included with PlayStation Plus Premium.
Twisted Metal: Black is also available on PS4 and PS5 for $9.99. This was the fifth game in the video game series, released on PlayStation 2 in 2001.
Interestingly, Twisted Metal III (1998) or Twisted Metal Metal (1999) are not available on any PlayStation console right now. Series creator David Jaffe acknowledged that these were “not good Twisted Metal games,” which is probably why Sony hasn’t bothered to bring them to PS4 or PS5.
2012’s Twisted Metal, the most recent game in the series, is also not available. This is a bit more surprising as it was released on the PS3 and received fairly positive reviews.
In any case, if you’re truly interested in experiencing the Twisted Metal games, at least you can play the two originals. Those are absolute classics.
