Call of Duty is the biggest and most popular first-person shooter franchise in video game history. Spanning over two decades and counting, the yearly Call of Duty release is something fans look forward to every October or November.

While the franchise started out as a World War II shooter, no entry more than Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare revolutionized the console FPS multiplayer scene. Since then, there’s been returns to WWII, jumps into the future, experimentation with jetpacks and verticality, but as we approach yet another release in 2023 we find ourselves with boots on the ground in a modern setting.

The newest COD will likely release sometime this fall, and the title is rumored to be Modern Warfare III. An apparent direct sequel and follow-up to 2022’s Modern Warfare II. In order to get ready for whenever the official reveal happens, let’s take a look back at the games (main series) in the franchise that have got us to this point.
