Is Days Gone 2 in development for PlayStation 5?
A new rumor is making its rounds across social media that claims Sony has begun development on Days Gone 2. Although no announcement has been made, it hasn’t stopped the chatter on Twitter, where Days Gone 2 has been trending for a couple of days now.
So is Days Gone 2 in development? Here’s what we know right now.
The History of Days Gone
Days Gone is a post-apocalyptic action-adventure developed by Bend Studio. It was released in 2019 for the PlayStation 4 and ported to PC in 2021. The game picks up two years after a pandemic that turned a large portion of humanity in zombie-like creatures. Players take on the role of Deacon St. John, an outlaw-turned-drifter who sets out on an adventure to find his wife Sara who had previously been assumed dead.
Days Gone had all the makings of becoming the next blockbuster PlayStation franchise, but it never lived up to the standards of other PlayStation franchises like Uncharted, The Last of Us or God of War. It wasn’t a bad game, per se, it was just pretty average. It sold decently though, but apparently not well enough to warrant a sequel.
The new Days Gone 2 rumor
The rumor stems from a Destiny 2 leaker who posted claims that not only is Days Gone 2 in development but that Sony is also acquiring developer CD Projekt Red. I’m not saying this can’t be true, but I’m warning you to take this rumor with a grain of salt.
First off, Sony just hosted its first PlayStation Showcase in a long while and there was no inkling of Days Gone 2 being in development. Secondly, Days Gone game director Jeff Ross posted on social media how the PlayStation Showcase bummed him out because Bend Studio could’ve had a sequel already released by now.
When asked why it still couldn’t happen, he responded that too much time has passed and too many people from the original team have already left the studio. He also noted that Sony “just doesn’t seem to care for it.”
If Days Gone 2 is in development, either Ross has no clue or he’s doing a good job of hiding it. But given any substantial hints of a sequel being in the works, I’m filing this one under false rumor.
