Destiny 2’s next major season, Season of the Deep, is upon us. The second season of the Lightfall expansion takes guardians back to Titan to investigate a strange new signal coming from below its methane sea. The new season will introduce new activities, weekly story missions, a brand-new dungeon (unlocking Friday), new and updated weapons and gear, and more. But not all of this new content is available to everyone. Destiny 2 is kind of a free-to-play game, but much of its content is actually gated behind the season pass paywall.

Is Destiny 2: Season of the Deep free?

While certain things with Season 21 — such as weapon/gear balancing and certain modes — are free to everyone, most of Season of the Deep’s content is only accessible if you purchased the Annual Pass for Destiny 2: Lightfall, or if you buy the Season Pass standalone.

If you recall, Destiny 2: Lightfall + Annual Pass came with season passes for Season 20, 21, 22, and 23. This also included the two dungeons, one of which is arriving this Friday, and a couple of other items. If you purchased this or plan to buy this, then you’ll get access to all of the Season of the Deep content.

The standard edition of Destiny 2: Lightfall only comes with the Season Pass for the currently live season. This means if you had already purchased Lightfall at launch, then you only got access to the previous Season of Defiance and would mean you need to purchase Season of the Deep separately. More on that later. If you haven’t bought Lightfall yet and do so now, you’ll get access to Season of the Deep, although you’ll have missed all of the content in Season of Defiance.

How much is Season of the Deep standalone?

If you’re buying the standalone Season Pass for Season of the Deep, then you’ll now be paying 1,200 Silver (~$12). This is 200 Silver (~$2) more than what it used to cost. The catch here is that you can only buy Silver in 500 or 1,000 increments. Whereas you used to be able to buy the SEason Pass for a single purchase of $9.99, you’ll now have to buy the 1,000 Silver purchase for $9.99 plus the 500 Silver purchase for $4.99, effectively spending a total of about $15 in order to buy the $12 season pass.
