Mortal Kombat 1 reboot was announced May 18 as the next entry in the storied fighting game franchise.
NetherRealm Studios tweeted the announcement trailer on the official Mortal Kombat Twitter account with the caption: “A new era has begun.” The trailer showcased the franchise’s iconic characters including Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Liu Kang, Shang Tsung and more, but it brand new iterations.
While the trailer begins with an epic feel and a powerful monologue from Liu Kang, it quickly transitions into the gore and fatalities that make the franchise so popular. It’s still Mortal Kombat of course.
Mortal Kombat 1 Reboot Announced Featuring Fire God Liu Kang
Mortal Kombat 1’s trailer ends with the reveal that in this new universe, Liu Kang is apparently the Fire God replacing Raiden’s role in this new universe. Perhaps the other two major reveals were that Scorpion and Sub-Zero are united brothers, and Shang Tsung emerges from a portal in what looks like Shao Khan’s outfit.
This truly feels like the next era of MK. And, thankfully, we already know a release date!
Mortal Kombat 1 is coming Sept. 19, 2023. Players can pre-order the game starting May 19 at 1 p.m. ET. Pre-ordering will get players Shang Tsung and beta access.
