Mortal Kombat 1 release date, platforms and trailer
After a couple of teasers, Warner Bros. Games finally announced Mortal Kombat 12, or rather Mortal Kombat 1 as it’s officially titled. Despite being the twelfth mainline game in the long-running fighting franchise, Mortal Kombat 1 will serve as a reboot of sorts.
As described in the press release, the game will introduce “a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe that has been created by the Fire God Liu Kang.” Many of the beloved characters we’ve grown to love over the years have been reimagined. Some of the confirmed characters so far include Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, and Johnny Cage.
The backstories of many of these legendary fighters have been reimagined and will be told through an immersive cinematic narrative Story Mode. NetherRealm promises unexpected twists on classic rivalries. For example, in the trailer, we see Scorpion and Sub-Zero, two of the franchise’s most iconic rivals, are now united as brothers.
And yes, all of the signature brutality and gore are back — and even turned up a notch. I’ll just let the official announcement trailer do the talking.
Mortal Kombat 1 platforms and release date
Mortal Kombat 1 is slated to release on September 19, 2023. It will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. Pre-orders are set to go live tomorrow, May 19th. A beta will be available in August 2023 for anyone who pre-orders the game on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
Are there any new gameplay features?
While today’s announcement and trailer focused more on the narrative aspect of Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm did tease at least one new feature fans can look forward to. Mortal Kombat 1 will introduce Kameo Fighters, “a unique roster of partner characters that can assist during matches, creating expanded gameplay possibilities for players. .” I’m going to assume some of these rivalries turned partnerships will serve as the Kameo Fighters.
