Nintendo Switch Online: Altered Beast Cheat Codes for Sega Channel

Altered Beast is an absolute classic of a game. “Rise from your Grave” is something that you can use at any gaming convention as a magnet to figure out who in the room is near 40. If you went to any arcade back in the day you heard the opening phrase all the time.

In this 1988 classic that was actually a pack-in game with the original Mega Drive, you play as a recently risen-from-the-dead warrior tasked with getting Zeus’s daughter back from the evil sorcerer Neff. Neff who, of course, was last seen in his rhino form in the Villains group in the movie Wreck-it-Ralph.

This game also has some fantastic cheat codes which, honestly, I’m so mad I didn’t know about as a child because getting to world 4 or 5 and restarting was the absolute worst.

Remember, these cheat codes use the Nintendo Switch controls, since you’re playing through the Sega Genesis Channel on Nintendo Switch Online. If you’re doing the OG systems you’re going to have to figure out those buttons for yourself.

Beast Selection

Have you ever wanted to go into the first stage of Altered Beast but wondered “what if this but bear?” Well, first off that’s weird grammar but secondly, now you can!

  • From the title screen hold down Y+B+A+down/left and press + to go to a screen where you can pick what beast you want to start with. After one round it’ll all go back to the regular rotation.

Level Select

I actually stumbled across this once as a kid and had no idea how I did it. Felt like I hacked the Gibson or something. But turns out the level select is really easy.

  • From the title screen, hold down B and press +. Easy peasy.

Sound Test

  • From the title screen, hold down Y, A, and up/right then press +.

Restart from the Last Stage you played

I would have killed to know this one as a child.

  • When you run out of lives and get returned to the title screen, hold down Y and hit start to start at the beginning of the last stage you played with full lives.
