Erik Karlsson has been around the NHL for what is now his 14th season. Throughout these 14 seasons, he’s put together an incredible career, having won the Norris Trophy twice and being named an all-star on four separate occasions, Despite only being an 86 overall in NHL 23, Karlsson performed like he was a 90+ overall during the 2022-2023 NHL season.

On Monday Night during the San Jose Sharks vs Winnipeg Jets game, Erik Karlsson made the history books. He netted his 24th and 25th goals of the season, giving him 100 points on the year. Not only did those two goals make him the first defenseman since 1992 to reach 100 points in a season, but Karlsson also became only the sixth defenseman in NHL history to reach that mark.

Defensemen are not known for getting this many points in a season, especially ones on rebuilding teams. The San Jose Sharks are not going to finish better than 29th this season, but Shark fans have had Erik Karlsson as their bright spot.

If you take a look back at his career, Karlsson’s previous best points in a season were 82 in 2015-2016. With his performance this year, it is no secret that he appears well on his way to his third Norris Trophy.

It will be interesting to see if Erik Karlsson’s overall in NHL 23 gets any higher. He has been an 86 overall since the game’s release back in October. While not a bad overall by any teams, this type of success deserves a rating boost. If it weren’t to happen in NHL 23, then at the very least, a rating boost in NHL 24. The 86 overall is a reflection of how Karlsson has been over the past handful of years, but an accomplishment like this deserves some recognition in the video game.

It will be interesting to see what moves the San Jose Sharks make in the offseason. The Sharks can win the Draft Lottery, take Connor Bedard, and build a future around him. With all the moves they made at the 2023 Trade Deadline, it is obvious that the Sharks are working towards a rebuild. It will be interesting to see where Erik Karlsson stands within that rebuild. Karlsson is signed with the San Jose Sharks through 2026-2027.
