HBO’s The Last of Us won’t end after Season 2
Now that the first season of The Last of Us is over, it’s officially time to start thinking about what comes next. We already know that Season 2 of the HBO Max show is on the horizon, but will that be the conclusion of the drama? It appears the answer to that question is no.
The season finale of HBO’s The Last of Us aired on Sunday night and delivered the finale that so many of the game’s players knew was coming. That might lead some into thinking they know exactly what the second season will bring as well. But Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have something up their sleezes.
In a new interview with GQ The Last of Us showrunners made it clear that they plan on at least having a Season 3 and it may not even stop there. The two were asked about the idea that Season 2 will feature the story from The Last of Us Part 2 while noting that TLOU2 is a rather large game.
Mazin and Druckmann were asked whether the entire game will somehow be packed into just one season. Mazin immediately responded, “no, no way” and Druckmann chimed in with “it’s more than one season.”
HBO’s The Last of Us showrunners reveal that Season 2 isn’t the end
These comments appear to be the first time that anything beyond The Last of Us Season 2 is planned. In fact, most of the internet seemed to think it was almost a foregone conclusion next year will be the final installment.
Of course, HBO has yet to commit to a Season 3, but it’s clear at this point that Mazin and Druckmann are going off the assumption that there will be more story after the next season.
However, just how many more installments there will be is still being kept under wraps by the showrunners. When asked whether there might even be a Season 4, Mazin wasn’t spilling.
"You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct. [Laughs]."
