At long last, GoldenEye 007 has been re-released on Xbox consoles and Nintendo Switch. The beloved Nintendo 64 classic arrived on Xbox Game Pass and the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack services on January 27, 2023 — 25 years after the game first launched.
With its arrival on Xbox and Nintendo Switch, fans can re-live their glory days of 90s gaming. Or, if you’re of the younger generation, you can experience what true competitive multiplayer felt like back in the day. The heart-pounding, adrenaline-inducing iconic multiplayer is back. On Xbox, it’s only available locally but on Nintendo Switch you can play online as well.
As exciting as the game’s release is, there’s still a large portion of the gaming audience unable to play GoldenEye 007 — those only playing on PlayStation. The game is not currently available on PS5 or PS4, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it’ll ever make its way to PlayStation consoles.
The original GoldenEye 007 was developed by Rare and released on the Nintendo 64. Rare has since been acquired by Microsoft and is now under the Xbox Game Studios banner. It’s highly unlikely Microsoft would release it on a competing platform like PlayStation.
But how does that explain its availability on Nintendo Switch? It likely has something to do with licensing rights. Nintendo was the company that originally published GoldenEye 007 for the N64, so there’s probably some sort of joint ownership of the IP.
It’s been a long road for GoldenEye 007 to come to modern consoles, but it’s finally here. It’s a shame it isn’t available on every platform, but hopefully, you own an Xbox or Nintendo Switch so you can enjoy what is arguably one of the most beloved classics of all time. Now if only the Xbox version has online multiplayer as well. Oh well, time to pick up the phone and get the gang back together for a night of multiplayer mayhem.
