Netflix has announced that The Witcher will return for a fourth season but there’s been a major shakeup in casting for the hit series. Shockingly, Henry Cavil will not be returning as the role of main protagonist Geralt of Rivia. Taking over the role of the titular monster-hunter in Season 4 will be Liam Hemsworth.

Both actors released official statements alongside the announcement. Cavill celebrated his time as the White Wolf, but is eager to see what Hemsworth could bring to the role. Here’s Henry Cavill’s official statement on passing the torch to Hemsworth.

"“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”"

Netflix didn’t announce why Cavill will not be returning for the fourth season but it’s very possible it could have something to do with his commitments to the DC universe. Prior to his role as Geralt, Cavill starred as Superman in multiple DC films. While it’s been a while since he starred in his own Superman film, Cavill returned as the Man of Steel in a mid-credits cameo at the end of Black Adam, the latest DC superhero film starring Dwayne Johnson. Shortly after news broke of his cameo, Cavill confirmed that he will be returning to the role of Clark Kent in the DC Comics extended cinematic universe.

For his part, Hemsworth praised Cavill’s performance in the series, but also expressed excitement to take up the White Wolf’s blades for his next adventure. Check out Liam Hemsworth’s official statement below:

"“As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”"

Obviously, these are mighty big shoes for Liam to step into, but he’s definitely starred in his own fair share of action blockbusters. The younger brother of MCU star Chris Hemsworth, Liam played Gale Hawthorne in all four Hunger Games movies and also starred in Independence Day: Resurgence and The Last Song.

Netflix’s The Witcher series is an adaptation based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s best-selling book series. The show follows Geralt, a Witcher with supernatural abilities, as he travels the Continent battling wild beasts and monsters. Along the way, he meets unlikely allies in the powerful sorceress Yennefer and Cintran princess Ciri.

In addition to the books and Netflix series, CD Projekt Red has produced multiple critically acclaimed video game adaptations. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was the latest in the series, but the studio recently confirmed that a new game is in development. CDPR also announced that a remake of the original Witcher game is coming.

Fans will have to wait quite a bit before they see Hemsworth pick up the sword. Season 3 of The Witch isn’t set to debut until the Summer of 2023. However, there is a spin-off series coming to Netflix that will explore the creation of the first prototype Witcher. The Witcher: Blood Origin is set to premiere on the streaming service on December 25.
