Like many other games, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 features crossplay capability in multiplayer. This function allows players on all platforms — Xbox, PlayStation and PC — to compete in multiplayer together, effectively shortening the wait time for matchmaking.

While this feature is beneficial to matchmaking, not everyone likes it. Console players might not like playing against PC players with mouse and keyboard, while PC players might not like competing against console players who have aim-assist.

Normally, games allow you to disable crossplay. However, it was discovered during today’s multiplayer launch that only PlayStation players can turn off crossplay on PS5 and PS4. Xbox and PC players have no such option, for some reason, although it’s not entirely surprising since the ability has also been omitted in games like CoD: Warzone and Halo Infinite.

Now there is a workaround to turn off crossplay on Xbox, but it involves going into your console settings and turning off the feature at a system level. This would apply to all games on your Xbox, meaning you won’t be able to utilize crossplay with any game as long as you have these settings enabled.

If you wish to disable crossplay on your Xbox follow these steps:

  • Go to the Settings menu on your Xbox console
  • Go to the General tab and select “Online safety & family”
  • Select “Privacy & online safety” and then “Xbox Live privacy”
  • Select “View details & customize,” then “Communication & multiplayer”
  • Navigate to the tab that says “You can play with people outside Xbox Live,” and choose “Block.”

This will turn off crossplay on your Xbox for all games. Unfortunately, PC players do not have the option to turn off crossplay through their system or game settings so for the time being they are stuck with matchmaking against Xbox and PlayStation players. It’s possible Infinity Ward could address this in the future, but so far the developer has not responded.
