The Last of Us Part 1: Which Edition should you pre-order on PS5?
Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed masterpiece The Last of Us is set to make its grand return on September 2nd. The PlayStation-exclusive blockbuster, which was first released on PlayStation 3 back in 2013 and then re-mastered for PlayStation 4 in July 2014 has been remade from the ground-up to take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s next-gen hardware.
And while some are giving Naughty Dog a hard time for remaking a game that still feels so fresh — which is really a testament to how advanced the original game felt for the time — it’s important to remember that The Last of Us is nearly a decade old. There’s an entire generation of gamers who may have been too young to play the original when it was first released.
If you plan on buying The Last of Us Part 1, there are currently two Editions of the game you can pre-order on PS5. There’s the Standard Edition which costs $69.99 and the Digital Deluxe Editions for $79.99. Here’s what’s included in each.
The Last of Us Part 1 Standard Edition
If you’re simply looking to experience the complete The Last of Us story, then this is for you. It’s $69.99, the same as any next-gen PS5 release.
This also comes with the Left Behind prequel chapter which is split in two two stories: the first of which is set three weeks before the events of The Last of Us, and the second which is set during the “Winter” chapter of the main story (which I won’t spoil).
Even if you played The Last of Us previously on PS3 or PS4, this version of the game may be worth revisiting. It has been completely rebuilt from the ground up to take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s latest technology. From more realistic lighting and atmosphere to more intricate environments to creative reimaginings of certain areas, this is the version of the game that Naughty Dog had originally envisioned. There’s also faster loading, 3D audio and adaptive triggers/haptic feedback.
The Last of Us Part 1 Digital Deluxe Edition
For $10 more, you can get The Last of Us Part 1 Digital Deluxe Edition. This Edition costs $79.99 and comes with some early unlocks to help you through the story, such as:
- Two skill upgrades (early unlock)
- Pistol/rifle upgrade (early unlock)
- Explosive arrows (early unlock)
- Dither Punk Filter (early unlock)
- Speedrun Mode (early unlock)
- Six weapon skins (early unlock)
Honestly, if you’re buying The Last of Us remake its to experience the story. These early unlocks aren’t really necessarily, so I’d recommend sticking with the Standard Edition of the game.
The Last of Us Part I Firefly Edition
When the remake was first announced, there was also The Last of Us Part I Firefly Edition for $99.99. Unfortunately, it’s now sold out and I don’t think it will be back. This version came with a limited edition SteelBook display case, and The Last of Us: American Dreams Comics #1 – #4 with new cover art. There were also some early unlocks and additional weapons.
