Although the NFL season is still a few weeks away, Madden 23 officially launched this week. As is the case after every offseason, the landscape around the league has changed drastically. Between free agency, the NFL draft and some blockbuster trades, the dynamics have shifted. Last year’s bottom dwellers may very well rise to be playoff contenders and vice versa.

Part of the fun of a new Madden game is jumping into Franchise mode and taking the reigns of an NFL team. While many like to take control of our favorite team, there are a bunch of us who prefer the challenge of taking a struggling team and rebuilding it into greatness. If you’re part of the latter group and are looking for a team to rebuild in Madden 23, here are my suggestions.

Houston Texans (74 OVR, 71 OFF, 70 DEF, 72 ST)

The Houston Texans are the worst-rated team in Madden 23, so naturally, they are the best fit for a rebuild. After years of former head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien decimating the Texans rosters, you’re taking over a team with not much talent but a ton of draft capital.

The Texans traded Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns this offseason for a 2022 first-round pick, 2023 and 2024 first-round picks, a 2022 fourth-round choice (No. 107), a third-round pick in 2023 and a fourth-round pick in 2024. So while there’s not much talent currently on the roster, you have the resources to build a solid foundation.

Still, these first couple of seasons won’t be easy. The best-rated player on the Texans in Madden 23 is left tackle Laremy Tunsil at 88 overall. Next is wide receiver Brandin Cooks at 87 overall. The third and final player rated in the 80s for the Texans is cornerback Steven Nelson at an 80 overall.

On the bright side, the Texans’ two first-round picks this year are both rated pretty decent. Cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. is rated a 77 overall with 93 Speed, 92 Acceleration, 93 Agility and 70 Awareness. His Man Coverage is 78 while his Zone Coverage is 72. Guard Kenyon Green is a little lower at a 72 overall but he’s definitely got the talent to be developed into an anchor on your offensive line.

If you plan to take control of the Houston Texans in Madden 23, the first thing you’ll probably want to do is find a franchise quarterback. David Mills and his 71 overall just isn’t going to cut it. And the depth chart isn’t much better with Kyle Allen (63 OVR) and Jeff Drisekl (60 OVR) behind him. The fun thing about the Texans is there are so many holes on the roster that you can approach the offseason with an open mind about who to sign and draft.
