FIFA 23: Every PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC exclusive gameplay feature
FIFA 23 takes to the pitch this September for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia. But although the game will be present on all of these platforms, there will be exclusive gameplay features only available on current-gen systems as well as PC and Google Stadia.
I should note that FIFA 23 is also coming to Nintendo Switch but as a Legacy edition once again, so there’s really no point in including it in any of these gameplay discussions.
Back to the real version of the game, EA Sports recently did a deep dive into the gameplay mechanics of FIFA 23 and highlighted exactly which features are exclusive to the new generation of consoles, PC and Stadia. Yes, as a reminder, the PC version of FIFA 23 will be the same as the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Stadia.
HyperMotion2 Gameplay Technology has been talked about extensively since FIFA 23 was announced. This is basically the next evolution in EA’s motion capture technology and it’s finally also being applied to the PC version. HyperMotion2 consists of Advanced 11v11 Match Captuer and Machine Learning, two systems that when working together take FIFA 23’s realism to the next level with over 6,000 animations.
EA used Xsens suits to capture millions of frames of animation from two full high-intensity football matches featuring professional teams. They also included motion capture of a women’s match since women’s club teams will be making their debut in FIFA this year. In addition to the match, EA also captured hundreds training drills
The other part of HyperMotion2 is Machine Learning, an algorithm that learns from the capture data. The gist of it is that it can generate movement animations in real time.
All of these animations help play into the new Technical Dribbling system which aims to improve the feeling of movement while controlling the ball. Technical Dribbling incorporates the Active Touch system to calculate a player’s path to the ball more intelligently.
ML-Jockey is another new-gen feature designed ” to provide tighter feeling controls and increased responsiveness when keeping up with attackers while Jockey or Spring Jockey are being used.” There’s also AcceleRATE which expands the player movement system by dividing players into one of three archetypes (Controlled, Explosive and Lengthy).
In this case, Explosive and Lengthy are the two outliers as most players will fall into the Controlled archetype and accelerate uniformly in a controlled manner. But explosive players are shorter and more agile, able to cover short distances and ahead of their opponents. Lengthy, which are taller and stronger players, require a bit more time to get going but once they do, they are able to rundown anyone.
The final new-gen feature is Composed Ball Striking, which is also powered by HyperMotion2. The goal with this is just smoother animations during specific shooting situations that require the ball to be controlled first.
As you can see, there’s quite a bit of features in FIFA 23 that are exclusive to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Stadia. FIFA 23 launches on September 30, 2022.
