GTA 6 news: Release window, setting and protagonist details revealed
Rockstar has already confirmed that the next Grand Theft Auto game, popularly referred to as GTA 6, is in active development; but, the studio hasn’t offered any additional information or details. Bloomberg came out with a new report today offering more insight into the game’s protagonist, its setting and possible release window.
The article claims that GTA 6 will feature a playable female protagonist for the first time in franchise history. This claim, which comes from “people familiar with the matter,” is in line with a previous leak from over a year ago. So it’s not terribly surprising, although it is quite exciting as many fans have been clamoring for a female protagonist.
All we know about this character is that she will be Latina. Story details remain vague, but it is said to be influenced “by the bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde.”
We also have new details on the game map which is said to focus on a fictional version of Miami and its surrounding areas. The last game to be set in a fictional Miami was 2002’s Vice City. However, that game was set in 1986. I assume GTA 6 will be set in the present time, although there’s no word in the report.
Rockstar does have plans to continually update the game with new missions and cities, which seems to be aimed at reducing crunch time — something that has plagued many studios. GTA 5 never saw any post-launch DLC although GTA Online has been updated quite frequently with new content. I assume GTA 6 will also have an online component as well, but it’s exciting that the single-player portion could also be updated.
GTA 6’s world will be the largest in franchise history, which more interior locations than any previous Grand Theft Auto game, but original plans were for it to be even better. Early designs, according to the report, included territories influenced by North and South America. It doesn’t sound like this is still the case though.
Now for the game’s release. Industry experts predict it will be out sometime during Take-Two’s 2024 fiscal year, which runs from April 2023 through March 2024. However, the article claims that developers are skeptical. Although there’s no firm schedule or release date, developers working on the project estimate the game is still at least two years away — so 2024, at the earliest it seems.
