Fallout 5 is coming after Elder Scrolls 6
We got our first proper look at Starfield gameplay during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase this past weekend, and it’s clear to see why so many are so excited for Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG. Although Starfield represents Bethesda Game Studios’ first new universe in 25 years, there are two others that fans can’t wait to jump into: The Elder Scrolls and Fallout.
The next installment in The Elder Scrolls has already been confirmed to be in pre-production. The Elder Scrolls VI was first revealed all the way back in 2018 but we haven’t heard or seen much of it since. But rest assured, it’s in pre-production.
And after that will come Fallout 5, according to Todd Howard. Speaking to IGN, here’s what the creative director at Bethesda Game Studios had to say about it:
"“Yes, Elder Scrolls 6 is in pre-production and, you know, we’re going to be doing Fallout 5 after that, so our slate’s pretty full going forward for a while. We have some other projects that we look at from time to time as well.”"
Howard didn’t confirm that Fallout 5 would be the direct follow-up to Elder Scrolls VI, only that it’s coming at some point after. Obviously couldn’t talk much about the next Fallout game, but did confirm they have a “one-pager on Fallout 5, what we want to do.”
The Fallout series is one of Bethesda’s most popular. The last mainline installment was Fallout 4, released in 2015. There have since been a couple of spinoffs, including the Fallout Shelter mobile game in 2015 and Fallout 76 in 2018.
Fallout 76 was unlike any previous Fallout games in that it was designed with online multiplayer at the forefront. BUt it launched to mixed reviews, largely due to the gam’s numerous technical issues and overall disappointing concept. There were initially no human non-playable characters which, as a Fallout game, was clearly a disappointment for many.
To Bethesda’s credit, they’ve worked tirelessly on post-launch content. In 2020, they released the Wastelanders update which reintroduced non-playable characters, and the game saw improved reception from critics and fans alike. While it’s still not the Fallout game many had hoped for, it’s much better now than it was at launch. It actually feels more like a standard Fallout game experience.
While Fallout 5 is undoubtedly still a ways off, it’s comforting to know that Bethesda still has plans for the franchise. “Fallout’s really part of our DNA here,” Howard said.
