Infinity Ward has officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a  a sequel to the 2019 re-imagining that jump-started the reboot of the beloved subseries. Earlier today, the developer tweeted an image of the refreshed logo while the official Call of Duty account tweeted a brief teaser.

Interestingly, it looks like Infinity Ward has opted to go with Roman numerals, a style normally embraced by the Black Ops subseries. The release of this new teaser could be indication that Activision is finally gearing up to reveal this year’s game.

It’s been rumored that Activision showed the new Modern Warfare 2 privately to top picks in this year’s 2022 NFL Draft and a press release today seemingly confirmed it. Activision wrote:

"In celebration of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, several of the top picks in this year’s 2022 NFL Draft showed their love of Call of Duty by wearing some of the hottest items on the red carpet, the green room and the stage."

The custom-made items don’t really reveal anything. It’s more of a marketing move from Activision, which has never shied away from partnership with celebrities and athletes to promote their game.

With the NFL Draft taking place this week, it’s possible Activision could be readying to officially release the reveal trailer. Perhaps we’ll see something this weekend on the final day of the NFL Draft?

As I mentioned, this is not a remake of the original Modern Warfare 2 from 2009. Rather it’s a sequel to 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which served as a reboot of the sub-brand that originally started in 2007. It’s rumored that the campaign will be “centered around the drug war against Columbian cartels.”

It’s believed that the release of Modern Warfare 2 will coincide with another map update for Call of Duty: Warzone, Activision’s free-to-play battle royale game. And there are also reports that Activision is working on a third game mode that will blend PvP and PvE elements.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare subseries is one of the franchise’s most popular. The 2019 reboot was the most successful Call of Duty to date, so anticipation is probably high for this sequel.
