One of the biggest announcements that comes from a sports video game is the reveal of who will be the cover athlete. Madden 22 decided to go with Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes and doing so made history with the Madden franchise. Brady and Mahomes are two former cover athletes to join forces as the first ever to be on their second Madden cover. This was also the second time ever that two athletes were featured on the Madden cover at the same time. Madden 10 was the other cover that featured both Troy Polamalu and Larry Fitzgerald. With Madden 22 soon to be in the rear-view mirror, it is time to speculate who the likeliest athletes are to grace the cover of Madden 23.

Since Madden 22 featured a cover with two athletes, it is unlikely that EA would repeat something like this again. It has only ever been done two times and if they consistently put two athletes on the cover, it takes away from the significance that it presents when it does happen. You also have to take into consideration that since Brady and Mahomes have been on the cover twice, it will be highly unlikely that it would be either of them either.

As we take a look back at past athletes who have been on the cover before, it doesn’t feel like a year in which we are going to see a repeat athlete. There is only one repeat athlete that I can see being on the cover, but the rest would of them would be brand new for Madden 23.

5. Matthew Stafford

A cover athlete is generally supposed to be a representation of the previous sports season. If this is true, then the reigning winning QB of Super Bowl LVI has to be included on this list. Matthew Stafford left the Detroit Lions to come and help bring a Super Bowl to Los Angeles and he did just that. More impressively, it only took him 1 year to do so.

Quarterback is arguably the most important position in football, especially in the modern-day era. Matthew Stafford proved that there was a quarterback issue in Los Angeles and his debut on the team fixed it, along with plenty of other key pieces that the Rams added as well. I can see Stafford being a top option on Madden 23 cover. Also, if EA is going to choose a player that represented the last NFL season as a whole, Matthew Stafford’s name must be floating around.

A Rams athlete hasn’t been on the cover on a Madden video game since 2003 when Marshall Faulk was on the cover and that was when the Rams were still located in St. Louis. Due to the way the Rams exploded during the 2021 season and winning Super Bowl LVI, this would be a perfect opportunity to put Matthew Stafford on the cover of Madden 23 while the Los Angeles Rams are a winning franchise.
