Changeup

Like I said, I’m a traditionalist pitcher. So to keep batters off balanced, you’re going to want some off speed stuff. For me, I like to go with a Changeup. The regular Changeup is quite effective, appearing like a Fastball, but traveling much slower as to disrupt the batter’s timing.

If you’re looking for a little more movement, there are variations of the Changeup such as the Circle Change, Palmball and the Vulcan Change. Once again, any of these pitches can be effective if well timed and placed.

The Circle Change has a bit more lateral movement than a regular Changeup while the Palmball has more of sharper downward movement. The Vulcan Change also has more downward movement than a regular Changeup but not quite as much as the Palmball. The Circle Change and Vulcan Change probably have the most movement in this category of pitches, with the latter starting at the top of the zone and dropping all the way to the bottom. The Palmball doesn’t have as big of a drop, but it’s definitely sharper.

A solid fastball combined with a well-thrown Changeup will keep even the most batters off balance at the plate which is really the goal when taking the mound. You want to keep them guessing. A simple Four-Seam Fastball and regular Changeup will definitely do the trick. But if you’re looking for more movement, a Cutter or Running Fastball with a Circle Change is also a fun combination. Call me old fashioned, but if you have a good 1-2 Fastball-Changeup punch, you’re on the right track.
