Upgrading Legendary Armaments

You may have some Legendary Armaments that you have that you have been upgrading as well, but you may have noticed that these special Armaments do not require Smithing Stones. Instead, Legendary Armaments require Somber Smithing Stones.

There is a total of 9 of these and each of them are used to upgrade your special Armament to one additional level. In order to get it to a max level of 10, you will need to acquire a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. There are only a total of 10 levels in order to get special Armaments max out, but finding the materials are often a lot harder to find.

List of Somber Smithing Stones for Legendary Armaments

  • Somber Smithing Stone (1): Upgrades special Armaments to level 1
  • Somber Smithing Stone (2): Upgrades special Armaments to level 2
  • Somber Smithing Stone (3): Upgrades special Armaments to level 3
  • Somber Smithing Stone (4): Upgrades special Armaments to level 4
  • Somber Smithing Stone (5): Upgrades special Armaments to level 5
  • Somber Smithing Stone (6): Upgrades special Armaments to level 6
  • Somber Smithing Stone (7): Upgrades special Armaments to level 7
  • Somber Smithing Stone (8): Upgrades special Armaments to level 8
  • Somber Smithing Stone (9): Upgrades special Armaments to level 9
  • Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone: Upgrades special Armaments to level 10

Just like regular Smithing Stones, you are able to find Somber Smithing Stones in the same sort of way — looting chests, buying them from various NPCs, and finding them on dead corpses are all ways you can go about finding them. However, just because there are only 10 levels acquire, that doesn’t mean you are going to reach max level any quicker. The reason that there are only 10 levels instead of 25 levels is because the quality of a special Armament is way stronger than a normal Armament.

If you are able to get a Legendary Armament to level 10 before you get a normal Armament to level 25, you will still get the “God Slaying Armament” Achievement/Trophy. Getting the Achievement/Trophy may be great, but the even more great thing and something that is going to help to progress through Elden Ring even further is you now have an Armament at max level. It will all take time, but any Armament maxed out is great for any Elden Ring Build.
