Elden Ring is about to get a bit more tougher. One of the complaints of FromSoftware’s latest entry — despite all of the glowing praise — is that it was a bit too easy compared to previous Souls games. Part of this was due to the overpowered nature of some of the game’s weapons and spells. With the latest patch, v1.03, FromSoftware took the nerf bat to many of these cheese items.

The full patch notes for Elden Ring v1.03 can be found here, but here are some of the noteworthy changes.

The damage of Sword of Night and Flame’s weapon skill, Night-and-Flame Stance, has been decreased. Previously, you’d be able to cast this and simply melt any enemies in front of you.

The Hoarfrost Stomp Ash of War has also seen its damage decreased and its cast time increased. This Ash of War was also incredibly powerful, especially on the Icerind Hatchet that you could find relatively early on in the game.

The Mimic Tear Ash, which basically becomes easy mode when you get it, has had its damage decreased. Additionally, the spirit’s behavior pattern has been changed.

Honestly, these nerfs were to be expected. There are countless videos of players just obliterating enemies with them so I’m not at all surprised to see them balanced. I do wonder if this will make New Game+ a bit more difficult. I just completed Journey 2 (and Platinumed the game) thanks, in large part, to the overpowered nature of Sword of Night and Flame. Without that laser, I don’t know if these bosses would’ve been as easy to defeat.

Patch v1.03 wasn’t all about nerfs though. Glintstone Cometshard, Comet and Night Comet have had their FP consumption reduced and the damage increased. The damage for Gravity Well, Collapsing Stars and Crystal Barrage sorceries have also been increased.

Beyond balance adjustments, Patch v1.03 also contains numerous bug fixes.

Elden Ring v1.03 is out now for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Steam. If you’re not happy with these adjustments, then you don’t have to update the game. By not updating, you’ll play the older version of the game and all these weapons will still be overpowered. However, you won’t be able to enjoy online play until you apply this update.
