MLB The Show 22 ratings: Predicting the best starting pitchers
Zach Wheeler (Philadelphia Phillies) – 93 Overall
Zach Wheeler is quietly one of the best starting pitchers in Major League baseball. The former Mets ace signed with the Philadelphia Phillies prior to the 2020 season and he’s only put up stellar numbers for them on the mound.
While the Phillies have underachieved as a team these past two season, Wheeler has been a dominant ace. In the shortened 2020 season, he went 4-2 with a 2.92 ERA and 53 strikeouts. He actually improved on those numbers last season. His 14-10 record is hardly indicative of his performance on the mound which saw him record a 2.78 ERA and 1.01 WHIP over 213.1 innings pitched — all career bests for the stud. He also pitched a career high three complete games.
Over the last two seasons, Wheeler has only only 19 home runs in his past 41 starts. As ESPN notes, of the 49 starting pitchers to have thrown over 200 innings over the last two seasons, only Corbin Burnes and Logan web have better ratios of home runs per nine innings.
The Phillies may repeat in mediocrity next season, but Wheeler should remain a bright spot for fans. Wheeler finished second in the NL Cy Young voting, behind Burnes, but he’s undoubtedly one of the best starting pitchers in baseball. Perhaps his Cy Young snub will serve as further motivation to continue dominating on the mound.
