Corbin Burnes (Milwaukee Brewers) – 95 Overall

The Milwaukee Brewers boasted one of the greatest starting rotations in franchise history last year and Corbin Burnes was a big reason why. The Cy Young winner put on a historic performance on the mound last season, which included the highest fWAR among starting pitchers at 7.5. It’s unrealistic to expect him to achieve that again this year, which is why I gave the edge to deGrom and Scherzer for ratings in MLB The Show 22. However, Burnes has pitched at an elite level over the past two seasons and has emerged as a top-level talent.

In the shortened 2020 season, Burnes went 4-1 with a 2.11 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. He proved it was no fluke last season by going 11-5 with a league-best 2.43 ERA (not including deGrom) in 28 games started (167 innings pitched).

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Burnes’ game is his strikeout to walk ratio. To begin the season last year, Burnes threw 58 strikeouts before allowing his first walk. He also posted a 15 strikeout game which included 10 strikeouts in a row. On the year, he recorded 234 strikeouts to just 34 walks.

Burnes didn’t even crack the initial top ten starting pitcher ratings at the launch of MLB The Show 21, but played his way into top five contention MLB The Show 22. At just 27-years-old, Burnes is just entering his prime. The experience and longevity of deGrom and Scherzer give them the edge in MLB The Show 22, but Burnes could easily supplant them both with another stellar performance on the mound this season. As a Chicago Cubs fan, this makes me sad.
