Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel hits mobile devices today for the United States. The new, premier digital way to play the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game released earlier last month for PC, Xbox, Playstation and Switch.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise has always had a rich history with video games. The exhilarating, fast paced gameplay is well suited to a digital client, though the last time we saw a fully featured Yu-Gi-Oh! experience was Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution in 2019.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel draws into mobile today, so what happens to Duel Links?

You may have noticed there are two Yu-Gi-Oh! mobile games out now: Master Duel, and Duel Links.

What’s the difference? Duel Links has a limited card pool and tweaked, speed optimized rules for mobile play. It’s actually so popular that Konami started printing paper products for that format under the Speed Duel line. Unlike Duel Links’s fresh take on the TCG, Master Duel is an unapologetic digital version of the full Yu-Gi-Oh! card game.

So what does this mean for Duel Links? Konami will still support the game, and I feel that having both Master Duel and Duel Links in the mobile space is a massive upgrade to the Yu-Gi-Oh! ecosystem.

Returning players may be intimidated by Master Duel, as years of power creep has rendered the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game into another beast entirely from what even an ex-tournament grinder like myself remembers.

Current competitive TCG players will find themselves completely at home here, and the mobile version will be sure to delight players who want to squeeze in some last minute practice on the way to a tournament.

Master Duel is intensely fun, but easy to burn out on. Players need options, and having Duel Links around provides another way to play and explore the game.

Master Duel and Duel Link are not competing for the same player base; there will be players who prefer one format to the other. This diversity of formats and ways to play them is only healthy for the longevity of the game and its player base.

Concurrent support for Master Duel and Duel Links is the right direction for the franchise, and is the start of creative game design that can take advantage of the rich history of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.
