Sony San Diego has revealed the cover athlete of MLB The Show 22 and, to no one’s surprise, it is Shohei Ohtani. The global superstar, who plays for the Los Angeles Angels, has become the face of baseball and put on a season for the ages last year.

The two-way phenom hit 46 home runs and 100 RBI’s last season while swiping 26 bases. On the mount, he compiled a 9-2 record as a starter with 3.18 ERA and 156 strikeouts. His show-stopping performance on the diamond earned him unanimous AL MVP honors. And now he’s the cover athlete for MLB The Show 22.

In addition to the reveal, Sony also announced the release date and platforms for MLB The Show 22. This year’s game will launch on April 5, 2022. It seems the game will release regardless of what happens with the current lockout.

It’s unclear how Sony will handle the rosters. Perhaps whatever trades and signings have been made will be reflected in the game at launch with any additional roster moves after the lockout ends being added via an update.

Once again, MLB The Show will be released on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. The Standard Edition of the game will cost $69.99 on current gen consoles and $59.99 on last gen consoles.

And, for the first time ever, MLB The Show will be coming to Nintendo Switch. It will be available for $59.99.

MLB The Show 22 will support cross-platform play, cross saves and cross progression across all three platforms. This means players can square off against each other regardless of what platform they are playing on. Cross saves will allow players to transfer a safe file for Road to the Show or Franchise mode to a different console. Additionally, cross progression allows players to earn and use any earned content on any platform or generation, excluding next-gen specific features.

Speaking of, it sounds like MLB The Show 22 will once again have features exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Sony didn’t get into specifics, but it looks like the Switch will be considered part of the last-gen family, so we probably shouldn’t expect Stadium Creator.

Sony will be revealing more of MLB The Show 22 over the next couple of weeks. Feature Premieres will be shared on Twitch, YouTube and Facebook Live with the episode schedule and additional information still to come.
