What to expect from Sony’s MLB The Show 22 reveal on Monday
Sony San Diego has confirmed that MLB The Show 22 will be revealed on Monday, January 31. This is good news considering many baseball fans were worried that the current lockout would impact the release of this year’s game. Thankfully, it seems like it won’t and everything is on track.
The reveal will take place on Monday, January 31, 2022 at 11:35 a.m. EST (8:35 a.m. PST) during a livestream broadcast from Times Square. So what can we expect?
Sony only confirmed that the event will feature the “cover athlete” reveal. The cover athlete doesn’t typically have too much affect on the gameplay, although it’s possible that some of the new features could be built around the theme of this year’s game, which is usually represented by the athlete themselves.
So besides learning who the cover athlete will be, what else can we expect from Monday’s reveal?
Release Date and Platforms
The reveal is usually accompanied by the release date. MLB The Show 21 released on April 20 last year and we can expect a similar launch date for MLB The Show 22, regardless of what happens with the player lockout. If the season ends up getting postponed, then any roster changes will likely be made via a post-launch update.
We’ll also almost certainly find out what platforms MLB The Show 22 will be released on. PlayStation and Xbox are pretty much a given. The series started off as a PlayStation exclusive, but made the jump to Xbox for the first time last year as part of Sony’s new agreement with the MLB.
The big question is if MLB The Show 22 will still be supported on last-gen consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One. Last year’s game was, although the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions had exclusive features. I’m willing to bet the same will be true this year.
Teaser Trailer and Feature Streams
I think we will get our first glimpse of gameplay via the cover athlete reveal. I think we’ll get hints at some of the in-game improvements, but we’ll have to wait for the exact details. Sony typically hosts dev streams in the weeks leading up to the game’s launch. Each stream is focused on a specific area of the game with Sony deep diving into the improvements made.
So those are my predictions for what to expect with Monday’s MLB The Show 22 reveal. As for the cover athlete, there’s really only one correct choice. I’ll let you guys guess in the comments.
