There was some concern that the current MLB lockout could impact the reveal of Sony’s MLB The Show 22. Turns out, that won’t be the case as Sony announced the cover athlete reveal will take place next week.

On Monday, January 31, 2022, at 8:35 a.m. PST / 11:35 a.m. EST, Sony San Diego Studio will reveal the cover athlete for MLB The Show 22 live from Times Square. Fans interested can tune in on Twitch, YouTube and TheShow.com.

Cover athlete reveals are kind of a big thing in the sports video game world, although it bears little impact on the actual game itself. It’s more of an honor for the player selected and provides some nice room for debate amongst sports fans.

This year, though, there’s one clear and obvious choice for the cover athlete of MLB The Show 22: Shohei Ohtani. The Japanese phenom is coming off his best statistical season in the Majors.

The two-way superstar made 23 starts, compiling a 9-2 record with a 3.18 ERA. In 130 1/3 innings, Ohtani racked up 156 strikeouts with a 1.09 WHIP. At the plate, Ohtani batted .257/.373/.592 with 46 home runs (runner-up for the most homers), 100 RBIs, 103 runs and 26 steals. He was the first player in MLB history to be named an All-Star as both a pitcher and a hitter, where he was a starter in both capacities. He was also unanimously voted the American League Most Valuable Player, while earning the Silver Slugger award as DH.

Not only is Shohei Ohtani a global megastar, but he’s got the skills to back it up. He has become the face of Major League Baseball and should, undoubtedly, be the face of MLB The Show 22.

Hopefully in revealing the cover athlete we also get our first glimpse at gameplay for MLB The Show 22 as well, or at least a sneak peek at some of the new features and improvements coming with the game. Last year’s game made significant strides with the introduction of multiple game modes, stadium creator (on next-gen consoles) and two-way players and loadouts. It was also the first time that MLB The Show had appeared on a console other than PlayStation.
