Xbox Game Pass is a must-have after Activision acquisition
Microsoft made waves in the gaming world with news that no one expected to wake up to. Microsoft has decided to buy gaming publisher Activision Blizzard for an enormous $68.7 billion.
This news is massive. Microsoft now owns some of the most popular video game franchises in history. Call of Duty, Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Crash Bandicoot, The Legend of Spyro, and even Candy Crush are all owned under the Xbox banner.
Just at a quick glance, you already know how wildly, popular these franchises are. Being owned by Microsoft is just going to open the doors wide open in terms of imagination for their Xbox Game Pass.
Currently on the Xbox Game Pass, you have a majority of the Halo franchise (including newly released Halo Infinite), the Gears of War franchise, the Mass Effect franchise, and hundreds of other great games at your disposal starting at the low price of $9.99 a month. There’s an even better option with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for $14.99 a month which includes Xbox Live Gold and EA Play.
Before the purchase of Activision Blizzard, Xbox Game Pass was being wildly successful. Now imagine the video games that are going to be added after this purchase. CEO of Microsoft, Phil Spencer, already came on the record to state that following:
"Upon close, we will offer as many Activision Blizzard games as we can within Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, both new titles and games from Activision Blizzard’s incredible catalog. We also announced today that Game Pass now has more than 25 million subscribers. As always, we look forward to continuing to add more value and more great games to Game Pass."
Phil Spencer wants to load Xbox Game Pass with as many games as he possibly can so that it will make people want to purchase it even more. Imagine now having the Call of Duty franchise, Crash Bandicoot franchise, Diablo franchise, Overwatch, and so many other top-selling video games/franchises all available for you to play whenever you want just for having this monthly subscription. While nothing is confirmed on what will be added to the Xbox Game Pass, you know that there will be some big franchises on the way — if not all of them eventually.
Another big question we have is whether some of these popular franchises like Call of Duty will become exclusive to Xbox gaming consoles. If so, that is a huge financial score for Microsoft. But we will have to wait and see what news about console exclusives come out through the course of the current year. Console exclusives are a great way to get more people to buy your gaming consoles, but it can also hurt the video game itself by how many copies are actually sold. It will be interesting to see how exactly Microsoft plans to handle this situation. Something that should also be noted is that Phil Spencer stated on the Xbox Blog a comment regarding Activision Blizzard games on different platforms.
"Activision Blizzard games are enjoyed on a variety of platforms and we plan to continue to support those communities moving forward."
If you are an Xbox fan, the news that was broken on this couldn’t have made you happier. Xbox is getting one of the biggest video game publishers in the world. If you are a PlayStation fan, this news can be a little frightening not knowing which Activision Blizzard games will be universal and which games will be solely on Xbox. If you are a video game fan all around, this news is going to be talked about for quite some time and the talks haven’t died down a bit since the announcement of purchase.
