Madden 23 will likely have Washington Football Team’s new name and uniform

When Madden 23 releases later this year, Washington Football Team fans will likely be able to play with the team’s official new name. The official new name and uniforms for Washington Football team are set to be revealed on February 2, 2022, which would give EA plenty of time to work the new design into this year’s game.

Washington temporarily changed its team name to the generic “Football Team” back in 2020 after years of controversy and outrage surrounding its the offensive mascot name. Washington has played the past two seasons as the Football Team while the franchise weighed all of its rebranding options. It seems now they’ve finally come to a decision.

While there had been plenty of speculation surrounding Washington’s new name, one fan-favorite mascot and named has already been ruled out; the team will not be called the RedWolves or Wolves. According to team president Jason Wright, trademarks held by other teams would “limit our ability to make the name our own.” In order to avoid future legal hurdles, the team opted to go a different direction.

What direction? Although the name is still a mystery, Wright teased it’s one that “aligns with our values, carries forth our rich history, represents the region and, most importantly, is inspired and informed by you, our fans.”

Back in September, WFT co-CEO Tanya Snyder seemingly confirmed the final eight candidates: Armada, Presidents, Brigade, Redhawks, Commanders, RedWolves (now ruled out), Defenders and Football Team. Those names were never officially confirmed to be the finalists by anyone other than Snyder.

One thing we do know for certain is Washington will retain its Burgundy & Gold color scheme.

Madden 23 doesn’t yet have a release date, although the series usually drops its latest installment in August. While the Washington Football Team’s new name and logo will be one of the exciting reveals, fans are probably more concerned with the gameplay itself.
