Sony may have been without a blockbuster exclusive for the holidays but there were plenty of games released for PS5 throughout the year that kept us busy. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Returnal were two of last year’s best games for the PS5 and prior to that there’s been no shortage of exclusives.

Sony is kicking things off early next year with two exclusives releasing in the first half of 2022. Plus, there’s much more to look forward to on the PS5 throughout the year. Here are my most anticipated PlayStation 5 games for 2022.

Horizon Forbidden West (February 18, 2022)

I’m in the minority here in that I enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn but wasn’t blown away by it. The general concept was fun and I very much enjoyed exploring this fascinating, post-apocalyptic world. However, I did feel that it got a bit repetitive towards the end and I wasn’t a huge fan of the storytelling method to reveal the past. Still, Horizon Forbidden Zero is considered by many to be one of PlayStation’s best games, so it’s understandable that people are looking forward to Horizon Forbidden West.

Horizon Forbidden West will take us to the west coast of the post-apocalyptic United States where players will uncover secrets beneath the ruins from the world of the Old Ones. The map will be larger and there will be more types of enemies to take down. Forbidden West will make multiple improvements with its gameplay, including enhanced melee combat, revamped climbing mechanics and improved traversal.

God of War Ragnarok (2022)

Sony Santa Monica Studios’ God of War is a PlayStation staple and 2018’s game was a reimagining of sorts for the long-running franchise. Unlike previous games, God of War was loosely inspired by Norse mythology rather than Greek mythology. God of War Ragnarok will serve as a sequel to that game and a finale to the Norse era, covering the Ragnarok events that brought about the end of days. Given the universal acclaim God of War received in 2018, it’s easy to understand why God of War Ragnarok is among the most anticipated PS5 games of 2022. With no release date, this could be Sony’s big holiday blockbuster.

Gran Turismo 7 (March 4, 2022)

I’m not a huge racing game fan, but Gran Turismo is a beloved franchise for PlayStation. Gran Turismo 7 will return with its collection of fan-favorite game modes like GT Campaign, Arcade and Driving School, as well as the reintroduction of the legendary GT Simulation Mode. Gran Turismo 7 will boast over 420 cars and over 90 track routes that feature dynamic weather conditions.

Multiplatform Titles

Beyond exclusives, there are plenty of multiplatform games coming to PlayStation 5 in 2022. Elden Ring (February 25, 2022), Dying Light 2 (February 4, 2022), and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (2022) are three multiplatform games I’m looking forward to. Elden Ring is basically a love letter to Dark Souls which, of course, I’m totally in for. Dying Light 2 is an open-world post-apocalyptic action-adventure and sequel to what I consider to be one of the most underrated games of last-gen.

Third Party Exclusives

Occasionally, Sony strikes deals for third-party exclusives.

One such deal is Forspoken, an action-roleplaying game developed by Luminous Productions and published by Square Enix for release on PS5 and PC on May 24, 2022. This game looks absolutely gorgeous. It follows the journy of Frey, a young New Yorker transported to mystical and cruel land of Athia. While beautiful, this land is also home to great magic and dangerous creatures. She must carefully traverse this land in search for a way home.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is a timed console exclusive for PlayStation 5 that will debut in 2022. It’s developed by Bethesda’s Tango Gameworks. And even though Microsoft now owns Bethesda, the exclusivity deal for Ghostwire: Tokyo is still being honored. This game looks absolutely bonkers. As Tokyo is overrun by deadly supernatural forces, you must ally with a powerful spectral entity and master a powerful arsenal of abilities to help unravel the truth behind the disappearing population.
