Women’s hockey making its way into NHL 22 next month
EA Sports dropped some groundbreaking news this week on their official Twitter page! NHL 22 will make history becoming the first game in EA’s NHL franchise to feature women’s hockey. EA Sports will be adding 10 IIHF women’s hockey teams that will be playable via the “Play Now” game mode. Not only will these teams be available to play against each other, but the tournament structure and visuals of the Women’s World Championships will be present in NHL 22 as well.
Vice President of EA Sports, Sean Ramjagsingh, stated: “The introduction of women’s national teams to NHL 22 as part of the upcoming IIHF content will be an important moment for the franchise in its continued effort to reflect the diversity of the hockey community.” Mr. Ramjagsingh’s statement could not be more correct. This is a very exciting moment for the video game franchise and is a great way to show that hockey isn’t just for one gender, but rather anyone.”
Other popular sport franchises such as FIFA and NBA 2K have already included women athletes in past years’ video games. FIFA added women soccer teams all the way back in 2015, while NBA 2K20 featured the WNBA for the first time ever. It is great to see that NHL 22 join this trend and feature IIHF women’s teams for the first time ever.
As someone who has watched the IIHF women teams play, women hockey athletes have tremendous skill and athletic ability. It is great that we will be able to showcase that skill in NHL 22 and play as some of the best women hockey players in the world. It will be interesting to see how EA Sports will go about each of their overall rating and to see which female athletes will hold the title of highest rated overall women hockey player in NHL 22.
This women’s hockey update will be coming January 2022. In the meantime, a massive content update just went live on December 9 that added IIHF Men’s and World Juniors teams and players to the game. While you wait for this incredible women’s hockey update to come this January, take advantage of all the IIHF Men’s and World Juniors content EA Sports has given us.
