PS Plus for December 2021: Free games for PS5 and PS4 revealed

Sony is closing out 2021 with a bang, giving us three quality games with PlayStation Plus in December. Highlighting the PS Plus lineup for this month is Godfall: Challenger Edition for PS5 and PS4, but I’m most excited for Mortal Shell. And the icing on the cake is Lego DC Super-Villains, a family-friendly take on DC’s greatest villains.

Godfall: Challenger Edition (PS5 & PS4)

Godfall was actually a PlayStation 5 launch title this year. The fantasy looter-slasher from Gearbox received lukewarm reception, getting praise for its gear-based, third-person melee action. However, the overall gameplay loop felt repetitive.

If you didn’t experience Godfall at launch, the Challenger Edition is like a skip the early game repetition cheat. The focus on this version is on the trio of endgame modes: Lightbringer, Dreamstones and the Ascended Towers of Trials. You’ll immediately be boosted to level 50 and receive a plethora of skills and weapons to take on the game’s most challenging modes alongside two other players in co-op.

Godfall: Challenger Edition only includes the endgame content modes, minus the story content of the base game and Fire & Darkness expansions. If you decide you want to experience the story of Godfall, you’ll be able to upgrade to the Deluxe Edition at any time to experience the campaigns.

Mortal Shell (PS4)

Mortal Shell is a ruthless, single-player action-RPG that has drawn comparisons to Dark Souls. From the core gameplay loop to the overall aesthetic, it’s basically a love letter to the Souls franchise. But whereas many other attempts to emulate the Souls games come up short, Mortal Shell actually feels like a faithful homage to the series.

LEGO DC Super-Villains (PS4)

Everyone loves the LEGO video game franchise, and who doesn’t love being the bad guy? In LEGO DC Super-Villains, you become the villain. You create an all-new super-villain and unleash chaos in an open world that spans the DC universe. With  Justice League missing, the “Justice Syndicate” has taken control. Alongside DC Super-Villains like The Joker, Harley Quinn and others, you must uncover the true intentions of these fraudster “superheroes.”

All three of these PS Plus titles will be available starting on December 7. As a reminder, the three bonus PS VR titles that were made available last month as part of the PS VR’s 5th anniversary — The Persistence, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Until You Fall — can be claimed until Monday, January 3.
