Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy absolutely needs to have a sequel

Where a sequel story to Guardians of the Galaxy could go

One of the things I loved the most about how Eidos Montreal told their story of the Guardians is that they just introduced bizarre characters without elaborate setup or explanation. The game introduces you to characters with strange appearances and just keeps going, allowing you to feel a sense of wonder and confusion that makes spacefaring science fiction so important.

They introduce you to Cosmo, a dog in a Russian cosmonaut suit that has immense psychic powers. They introduce you to Ruby Thursday, a scientist who replaced her head with a round computer that’s capable of changing shape and projecting limbs from it. No explanation given for either of them. You just keep going.

Even later in the game, you fight the Wendigo on an alien planet. You might not know anything about the character. Or you might know the character well and get confused why people suffering from a Canadian curse are running wild on a planet. And while being confused you might miss that there’s a vessel from S.W.O.R.D. crashed into the planet with signs that the team was abandoned and very low on food. That lack of food created the events that created the Wendigos.

You might miss these things or be confused but that’s good. It makes everything alien AND it gives them the ability to add characters without having to give everyone an elaborate backstory.

The sequel could absolutely expand on it. There are so many hints to people that exist in this universe that we never get to actually meet. For example, Star-Lord has a poster in his room of famed X-Men slash disco singer, Dazzler. This means the X-Men exist in this universe.

You also encounter several vending machines that have famous characters on them, from Ronan the Accuser to the Shi’ar Majestrix. Ther’es also my personal favorite, teleporting mutant and badass rocker, Lila Chaney. I’d LOVE to see Lila in the next game as space stories with her in Marvel books are always a million times better with her.

This gives whatever they decide to do with the sequel the joy of having already established the existence of several characters or being able to just bring in anyone. This is the game that casually gave us Fing Fang Foom out of nowhere, so it wouldn’t be a huge stretch for them to bring in other characters from, frankly, anywhere in Marvel. Personally, I’d love it if they brought in Kitty Pryde. Not only was she my favorite Star-Lord but I’d love to see the two of them form a love/hate relationship as she realizes how ridiculously useful her powers are for waging a space battle.

Next. Guardians of the Galaxy embraces its comic book roots and I love that. dark

To make a long story short, Marvel’s Guardian’s of the Galaxy has set a remarkable precedence in that it’s one of the few Marvel games that can just have any character added to it and it still works. I know the chance of a sequel is low, especially with Marvel’s relationship with Square Enix being really rocky due to the whole Avengers game mess. But this game showed me how great a Guardians of the Galaxy game could be with enough love and made me desperately want more after my team walked on together.
