Every Marvel game in development for 2022 and beyond
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy released this week to critical acclaim and after the travesty that was Marvel’s Avengers, restored our faith in the future for Marvel-inspired video games. So what’s next for Marvel-based video games?
Unless there is some surprise release between now and December 31, Guardians of the Galaxy is the last adventure we’ll take in the Marvel universe for quite a while. Although there are multiple Marvel-inspired games currently in development, the soonest we’ll see one release — barring delay — is 2022.
Let’s take a look at the confirmed Marvel games currently in development for release in 2022 and beyond.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns (March 2022)
Marvel’s Midnight Suns breaks away from the typical action-adventure format we typically experience with Marvel heroes. In development at 2K Games and Firaxis, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a tactical RPG with gameplay similar to the X-COM series but also quite different. Heroes’ powerful abilities have been mapped to cards and with a new hand of cards dealt to you every turn, you must adapt to the battle and think on your feet. Additionally cards can be upgraded and modified for new effects or to create new synergies with other heroes, adding a deeper level of strategy to your team-building.
In the game, you play as the Hunter, an original hero that you customize yourself. With the demonic forces of Lilith threatening the world, you must forge friendships and fight alongside iconic Marvel heroes from The Avengers, X-Men, Runaways and more.
Barring any delay, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is due out on March 22 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023)
In 2019, Sony and Insomniac Games delivered the best Spider-Man video game ever in Marvel’s Spider-Man. That was followed up with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a standalone title that continued the adventures as the web-slinger but as teenager Miles Morales in the footsteps of his mentor, Peter Parker. That, too, was a well-received success although it was admittedly much smaller in scope.
In 2023, we’re finally getting a full-fledged sequel in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This will continue the adventures of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, and based ont he teaser, will introduce one of the franchise’s most iconic villains: Venom.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is due out in 2023 exclusively for PlayStation 5.
Marvel’s Wolverine (TBA)
Insomniac Games is also developing a video game based on another of Marvel’s most popular characters, Wolverine. The game is still very early in development, hence the “TBA” release, but it will deliver “emotional narrative” and “cutting edge gameplay.”
Untitled Marvel Project from Skydance New Media (TBA)
This is the most recent announcement — a collaboration between Marvel and Skydance New Media, the interactive arm of Skydance Media. This currently untitled Marvel project is being led by Amy Hennig, former creative director at Naughty Dog who is best known for her award-winning work on the Uncharted series.
We don’t know much about this game other than it’s a “narrative-driven, blockbuster action-adventure game, featuring a completely original story and take on the Marvel Universe.” No release date, platforms or anything have been announced yet.
