Winback: Covert Operations

Man, I could not find a commercial or a trailer for this bad boy. If you’re not familiar with Winback that’s perfectly alright. Every time Nintendo releases a collection of games they are guaranteed to add-on that makes people question what got it invited.

Winback can best be described with the sentence, “We have Metal Gear at home.”

It’s a very simplistic stealth shooter with large polygons, very generic characters, and a remarkably by-the-books stealth war-type story. I promise you, if you want the intro above it’s going to give you a feeling you’ll keep for the entire game.

The one thing that makes this game noteworthy is that while it very much feels like an attempt to make a Metal Gear, it created a lot of things that Metal Gear ended up being inspired by like the cover system.

Mario Tennis

That’s right, at one point, Nintendo of America felt the best way to sell Mario Tennis was with a 30-second commercial mostly focusing on a rich man drinking urine. You’re welcome.

Mario Tennis is a fairly enjoyable tennis game that is devoid of the special moves the current ones have. There’s also a surprising amount of characters to pick from but, I guess if you’re just hanging out on tennis courts you got more room.

Mario Tennis is famous for bringing some characters into the Mario world in bigger ways. It brought Birdo back from Super Mario Brothers 2 (the American version), it gave Princess Daisy her first color appearance as she hadn’t been seen since Super Mario Land for the Game Boy. And, most importantly, it gave us Waluigi.

The one thing I’m very curious about with this release though is that in the original there were four characters you could only unlock by linking your Game Boy to the game: Alex, Nina, Harry, and Kate. Now, given, these are very simple human characters but they’ll be in the game’s coding and I’m really curious if there’s a way to access them.

All in all though, it’s a fairly entertaining game, especially multiplayer, and shouldn’t be overlooked.
