Every N64 launch game for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Mario Kart 64
Ah, Mario Kart 64, the preferred Mario Kart of people who slow pour their coffee with a kettle and prefer their music on LP, at least when company is over. This is the Mario Kart that really showed what the game could become. Sure, there was one on the Super Nintendo but it suffered from just being a bit too ambitious for a 16-bit system. Mario Kart 64 was the one that introduced things like elevated landscapes, more brightly animated power slides, and a lot of the charm that made Mario Kart what it is today.
If you haven’t played it in a long time though and are used to the modern Mario Karts it’s going to be a huge step back. So if you’re used to Mario Kart 8’s 36 playable characters with customizable karts to 8 characters using standard go-kart frames. Also, the original suffers from the biggest Kart Krime in the galaxy, there’s no Daisy. I’m sorry but if me passing you isn’t announced with a loud, screeching “HI I’M DAISY” then why even get behind the wheel.
It does feature many stages that are iconic. Toad’s Turnpike was an amazing stage that featured you driving through heavily crowded highways. The Banshee Boardwalk is still a fun stage for showing off your ability to power slide well by featuring narrow tracks you could fall off with almost no railings to help you. And Wario’s Stadium was an incredible stage that allowed you to completely screw over your opponents with a well-timed shell.
The addition of online multiplayer is a nice touch though as revisiting this game is a lot more fun if you can actually bring a friend with you.
