Eight years. That’s how long it has been since Grand Theft Auto V was released. For those keeping track, this is the longest wait we’ve had to wait between new games in the series. It seems we’ll be waiting a little longer as Rockstar revealed today Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, seemingly putting hope for a GTA 6 announcement on hold for at least a little while longer.

The announcement of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition — which includes upgrades versions of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas — doesn’t come as too much of a surprise of course. There have been rumors and leaks surrounding it for months now. But the announcement still stings as fans have long awaited a new installment in the series. The disappointment is all over Twitter.

This one is my personal favorite.

What’s particularly funny about this one is that while original Grand Theft Auto III players are waiting for GTA 6 , this remastered trilogy actually brings these three classic games to an entirely new audience who may never have played the originals. Given that GTA V is now eight years old, there’s a good chance that many of the people who grew up with it haven’t ever played these earlier influential games. While the mechanics are admittedly going to feel a bit antiquated, especially since you won’t be swapping between characters, the adventures are certainly worth jumping into.

Unfortunately, Rockstar didn’t even mention the prospect of Grand Theft Auto 6 in their announcement today — probably because it’s still really far off. The latest rumors put GTA 6’s earliest release in 2025. It’s a long wait, but when you read about some of the potential tech behind it, there’s probably good reason for it.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is set to arrive on PS5/PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC later this year. A mobile version for iOS and Android is slated for 2022.
