With Battlefield 2042 set to launch next month, EA has updated its Dual Entitlement program. Previously, those who were looking to upgrade from the PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 version of the game for free would have to purchase the Gold Edition for a whopping $99.99. In other words, while the upgrade was “free,” it wasn’t really free because of how much extra you’d be paying.

That’s changed now, as the standard digital edition of Battlefield 2042 on PlayStation 5 now includes EA’s Dual Entitlement feature, meaning it comes with both the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game. So far it seems that this next-gen bundle only applies to the digital versions of the game and not physical copies.

The PS5 version of Battlefield 2042 costs $69.99, whereas the PS4 version costs $59.99. If you currently have a PlayStation 4 but do plan on getting a PlayStation 5 at some point in the near future, you’re probably better off buying the game on PS5 so you can make use of the upgrade feature. Otherwise, you’ll be paying full price for the PS4 game on its own and then paying full price again for a separate PS5 copy.

Battlefield 2042 on PlayStation 5 will take the action to a whole new level, expanding the maximum number of players in a match of Conquest and Breakthrough to 128. Additionally, the game on PS5 will feature some of the largest maps ever created in a Battlefield game. The PS4 version remains capped at 64 players with reduced map sizes.

With so many people currently unable to purchase a PlayStation 5 due to supply issues and Battlefield 2042 launching around the holiday season, this is obviously the right move by EA. Locking Dual Entitlement behind the more expensive Gold Edition was a blatant money grab, so it’s nice to see them expand the Dual Entitlement feature. You’re still paying the $10 next-gen upgrade cost but at least you’ll only have to buy the game once.
