Sony could be reviving Twisted Metal, one of its flagship video game franchises. Although the once popular series sort of tapered off since its heyday in the late 90s, early 00s, Sony is seemingly keen on bringing it back.

A new report from VGC claims UK game studio Lucid Games is has started development on a new installment of the vehicle combat franchise. Lucid Games developed Destruction AllStars, another vehicular combat game that was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and released earlier this year.

Destruction AllStars received fairly average scores, although the core gameplay loop, driving mechanics and actual vehicular combat were all praised. That’s a good sign for a potential new Twisted Metal game.

The report adds that the new Twisted Metal game would e build around a free-to-play model which, as long as it’s not pay-to-win, I’m okay with. One of the knocks on Destruction AllStars however was its invasive microtransactions, so this model has the chance to backfire if not done properly.

The release of this new Twisted Metal game is said to coincide with the live-action adaptation television series that’s currently in the works at Sony. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of Deadpool and Zombieland, are penning the series, which will be an action comedy that “will focus on an outsider tasked with delivering a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland roamed by bandits in deadly vehicles.”

Twisted Metal is one of my favorite video game series of all-time but there’s no denying the last few attempts have been a bit of a letdown. But I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for it because of the memories I have growing up with it on PlayStation. I spent countless hours with Twisted Metal, Twisted Metal 2 and Twisted Metal 3. The series began to get a bit stale for me after that, but nostalgia will always keep me coming back.

A free-to-play version of Twisted Metal is an intriguing prospect. New characters/vehicles could be released regularly and perhaps you could use microtransactions to purchase cosmetics, like different styles. Imagine the Sweet Tooth ice cream truck but with slightly different variations. It could work.

Nothing official has been announced and there’s a chance this rumor is exactly that. Given that Desturction AllStars struggled to find an audience — even with the help of being a PS Plus title — I’m not so sure Sony is keen on bringing another vehicular combat game to market — even one with a history like Twisted Metal.
