Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers offer a blank slate with little payroll commitment and five prospects in the Top 100. The team payroll actually comes in under $80M, but if you find a team to move the 38-year-old Miguel Cabrera to, you’ll shed another $30M off that. He’s actually the only big salary to worry about. The downside is outside of him, there’s not a ton of players that can net you a lot via trade. You can make a lot of lateral trades for some similar players that you like more. You have players like SP Matt Boyd, LF Robbie Grossman, 2B Jonathan Schoop, SP Jose Urena, SP Michael Fulmer and CF Jacoby Jones to trade. Again, none of them are going to net you a top player or prospect.

But you might not need to do that when you can build with one of your top prospects or trade a couple for really good players. The Tigers Top 100 prospects feature:

  • P Matt Manning
  • P Tarik Skubal
  • OF Riley Greene
  • P Casey Mize
  • 3B/1B Spencer Torkelson

Torkelson is the player to be most excited about. The former No. 1 overall pick has a special bat that can hit for both average and power. I’d recommend holding onto him and Mize (another former No. 1 overall pick) and building around the two of them. The draft and some smart trades will keep you competitive until your ready to make a blockbuster trade dealing multiple prospects for a star player and making a push for the playoffs.
