An ‘It’ video game can break horror video game records

Pennywise from the horror film ‘It’ is no stranger to breaking records. Pennywise can break even more records if he gets his own video game franchise.

Pennywise the dancing clown has taken over the horror industry just in the past three years alone. What started as a movie back in 1990 got its reboot in 2017 and it honestly could not have been any more successful than it was. Horror fans absolutely loved the reboot and that is saying a lot given that not all remakes of movies go very well.

The original It movie had a run time of 3 hours and 12 minutes and instead of remaking the movie in one lengthy reboot, New Line Cinema decided to break the story into two separate movies. The first It movie reboot that was released in 2017 followed the kids of Derry, Maine. As the tale goes Pennywise only comes out every 27 years. This was a great marketing move having the new It movie released 27 years after the original movie came out. In 2019 the final movie in the rebooted It franchise came out called It Chapter 2. This movie took place 27 years after the first It movie and saw all the kids from It 2017 all grown up.

The It movie from 1990 had the characters as kids and adults throughout the whole 3 hours and 12 minutes of the film. The rebooted franchise didn’t want to rush the movie and instead broke it down to one movie focusing on the kids and one on the kids all grown up.

The rebooted It movie broke horror movie records and was the highest-grossing horror film of all time, grossing $700,381,748 dollars. I don’t think anyone saw that coming. The fact that It broke the all-time grossing horror film franchise-record still boggles my mind to this day. The movie was very well deserving of holding that title and is a must-watch if you haven’t already. It Chapter 2 did very well at the box office grossing a whopping $473,093,228 dollars. Combined between both movies they grossed more than $1 billion dollars. That is something that not many horror franchises can say that they accomplished.

With all that being said, it seems odd that no one has tried creating a video game for the terrifying clown. Pennywise broke box office records and an It video game would hands down break horror video game records. If people loved the movie as much as the facts show, then it would only make sense that people would play a video game based on it. You can even break down the numbers even more. The average cost of a standard movie ticket is roughly $10.

More from Opinion

The average cost of a major video game ranges from $40-$60. That is potentially 4x-6x the amount of money of a standard movie ticket. However, you can’t assume that everyone who watched the movie will buy the video game either. Even if 1/3 of the people who saw the It movies bought the video game, that would still be massive sales for a horror game as well. Then there are always those people who would buy the video game, but have never seen the movies. It can work out both ways.

Based on the movie’s success, if a company decides to pick up this idea I can see it doing wonders for them. The main idea here is how to create the story of Pennywise into a video game, but that is something that can be done with just a little bit of brainstorming. Does an It video game involving Pennywise sound like something you would play? I know that if they ever released a video game involving Pennywise, I would have to try it out just for the love of the It franchise. Who knows, maybe an It video game is secretly in development and is just waiting to be announced. I guess only time with tell.
