The ability to grow pumpkins has come to Animal Crossing: New Horizons! Check out our guide to get your garden going for DIY recipes.

What’s this? What’s this? There’s something in the air. And that thing is October energy! And if you’re an Animal Crossing: New Horizons player it means a ton of new stuff; Halloween, new costume options, new skin tones and eye colors and crops (one of the things I’m most excited for)!

Now, it’s not a lot of options but it does give us the ability to plant pumpkins. And, as Isabelle is very excited to tell you when you turn on the game today, those pumpkins will be used for DIY recipes you’ll find throughout the month.

The pumpkins are sold as starters all month from the Nook Shop but if you hop on today, October 1, you’ll find Leif hanging out in the Town Square. Any time you see him this month he’ll also be selling pumpkin starts but at half the price — so buy a ton.

From there all you got to do is plant them. Now planting is simple, like planting flowers. But there’s a couple of things to know.

Pumpkins take four days to grow and come in four colors; orange, yellow, white and green. Green is the rarest. You won’t know until they grow but if you dig a hole and plant one of your pumpkins it’ll grow more pumpkins of that same color, which is helpful if you’re looking to make an orderly garden or to focus on one particular color.

Orange pumpkins are the most important because you need these for crafting. White, yellow and the elusive green are used for customizing the DIY items.

Another thing you need to do is to water them. They’ll still grow if you don’t, but watering them they may grow in a cluster of up to three pumpkins in one spot. Personally, I’m watering them with a golden watering can just to see if that makes a difference so stay tuned in a few days for that one.
