Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War PS4 to PS5 upgrade explained
The complex process to upgrade Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War from PS4 to PS5.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will release on November 13 and will be available on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The game will support cross-play across both console generations but a little more confusing is how Activision is handling the way you can upgrade from the PS4 to the PS5 version of the game.
While some publishers are making it easy by simply offering free upgrades (you can find a full list of games here), others are charging an upgrade fee. Some are doing a hybrid, forcing players to buy a special edition version for a little bit more. Activision’s path to upgrade Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a bit complicated.
Forwards Compatibility supported
Before we talk about upgrading, it should be noted that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s backwards compatibility. If you purchase the physical or digital version of the game on PS4, you’ll be able to play it on PS5 without paying any sort of upgrade fee. However, you will not get any of the next-gen features, such as higher framerate, ray-tracing or faster load times.
