Happy Gilmore actor Chris McDonald discusses PGA Tour 2K21 and more
We caught up with Happy Gilmore actor Chris McDonald, who was part of PGA Tour 2K21’s hilarious commercials.
PGA Tour 2K21 is here and been getting some playtime since its release. With the PGA Tour license making a return with added courses, tournaments, and tour pros for the first time, it’s a deeper experience. The iconic course designer is back once again and is a staple in the Golf Club/PGA Tour 2K series.
Before release, the folks at 2K dropped a commercial that featured cover star Justin Thomas, Real World and WWE star The Miz, rapper Schoolboy Q and famed actor Chris McDonald who played the legendary role of Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore.
They are all seen playing the game together online using their MyPLAYERs. In the commercial, McDonald hilariously unleashes his inner McGavin with some rage quitting after some tough shots.
We had a chance to chat with him about the commercial, PGA Tour 2K, and a bit about Happy Gilmore as well. We greatly appreciate his taking the time to speak with us.
Among other things, McDonald talked about how much fun it was to portray McGavin in the commercial and what it was like working with the guys at 2K. He also discussed his favorite course in the game and how he enjoys the different levels of difficulty that the game offers.
“This game takes it to another level in the depth of its possibilities. You can start as a beginning player and go all the way up to a pro. It has all those levels and the learning curve is quick,” McDonald said about the game. “The thing about this particular game is, again, the depth of all the things you can do. All the changes you can make, from wind velocity to different courses to different players.”
As for his favorite course in the game, McDonald said Sawgrass and TPC jumped out to him. “Great golf courses,” he said. “And the detail they do. This is a game-changer because it’s just so many different things.”
As mentioned, the game features some new courses to go along with the ones that were included in The Golf Club 2019 Featuring the PGA Tour. The difficulty settings are much more versatile than in the past, making it flexible for anyone.
Of course, we had to talk about his iconic role as Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore, which is now nearly 25 years old.
"“Not a day goes by where — when I go outside of my house, people call me Shooter. It’s fun to have a film that I’m proud of. Look, if I didn’t do it, who knows what they’d be calling me on the street. Movies like this, sports movies especially, have that kind of universal appeal all over the world. I’m thrilled to have been a part of it.“They really kind of enjoyed what I did. To be that big petulant baby that Shooter was. It just makes me laugh to do that movie. The very first scene I did was try to buy his house and it was so funny just to be there just going ‘Well, I do dabble at real estate.’ We had a great laugh and we kept kind of one-upping each other throughout the movie.”"
