Xbox Series S: Phil Spencer drops hints of August event
Microsoft could be hosting another Xbox event in August which could reveal the rumored Xbox Series X.
Following the Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft could be hosting another event in August dedicated to the future of gaming. Speaking on iJustine’s Same Brain podcast, Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox, was talking about backward compatibility with the Xbox Series X, praising the work of the team on optimizing older games, when he also mentioned the possibility of an August event.
"“I’m encouraged to be able to talk more about it – should be August. I think August we’ll have more to say on that.”"
While Spencer is likely referring to backward compatibility news being shared in August, his comments have sparked speculation of the previously-rumored August Xbox event. A previously leaked document revealed Microsoft had plans to unveil another next-gen Xbox, codenamed “Lockhart.” Eurogamer reported this was to be the Xbox Series X, a second cheaper next-gen Xbox console.

This more affordable option would be slightly less powerful than the Xbox Series X, packing 7.5GB of RAM and around 4 teraflops of GPU performance. It was reportedly designed with 1080p and 1440 monitors in mind. The Xbox Series X, of course, has been designed to be the most powerful gaming console ever, and it will likely come with a price tag to reflect that; although, Microsoft has yet to announce any sort of pricing information.
Again it’s unclear exactly what Spencer is referring to. Whether it will be a simple blog post regarding backward compatibility or a massive event unveiling the Xbox Series S is anyone’s guess.
Perhaps if it does turn out to be a big event we’ll finally get to see some multiplayer gameplay from Halo Infinite. The Xbox Games Showcase gave us our first look at the highly anticipated title but only showed off about 10 minutes of campaign gameplay.
Spencer is usually pretty good about addressing online rumors, so maybe he’ll set the record straight regarding his comments.
