Check out the free games coming to Xbox Games with Gold for August

As we prepare to turn the calendar page, Microsoft has announced the free Games with Gold for the month of August 2020. Unfortunately, it’s another lackluster month for the program. It’s not that the featured games are bad, it’s just they are very niche in their target audience.

Headlining August’s lineup is Portal Knights, which is actually the best title in the batch. The award-winning sandbox action-RPG is all about crafting your own adventure; level up your hero, craft powerful gear and defeat Portal Guardians in real-time tactical combat. Portal Knights will be free for Xbox One all month from August 1 through August 31.

Also arriving on August 1 is MX Unleashed for Xbox 360 (and backward compatible with Xbox One). This is a niche title for motorcross fans as you perform stunts and tricks across various tracks and supercross venues. Again, this is a game that got great reviews but it’s just a niche title. This will be free until August 15.

More from Microsoft

The second Xbox One game doesn’t arrive until August 16. It’s Override: Mech City Brawl, a mech-battling game that also received good scores. This game is all about taking giant mechs into combat across a campaign and various multiplayer modes. There are 12 customizable mechs to pilot, each with their own fighting style and unique abilities. Override: Mech City Brawl will be available until September 15.

The fourth and final free game for August is Red Faction II. This is an Xbox 360 game that is also playable on Xbox One. It’s a sci-fi first-person shooter set on Mars. Five years after the rebellion, it’s up to you to lead a squad of super-soldiers in an attempt to overthrow a corrupt dictator and government. Red Faction II can be claimed between August 16 and August 31.

With Xbox Series X arriving later this year, it will be interesting to see what becomes of Games with Gold. Will Microsoft continue to deliver Xbox 360 games monthly? Or will they shift their focus to Xbox Series X and Xbox One games? With the consoles emphasizing backward compatibility, there’s a very good chance the first few months will continue to see Xbox One and 360 games that will be playable on Xbox Series X.
